How to Calculate Your Life Path Number

Updated August 12, 2026 · 7 min read

The Life Path number is the most important number in your numerology chart. Think of it as your astrological sun sign in numerology: it describes your core personality, the path you walk, and the lessons your soul came here to learn. Unlike your karmic tail number, which reveals past-life patterns, the Life Path looks forward to what you are building now.

The Life Path Formula

The calculation uses your full birth date: month, day, and year. Each component is reduced to a single digit or master number (11, 22, 33), then the three results are added together and reduced again.

Step 1: Reduce the month to a single digit or master number.
Step 2: Reduce the day to a single digit or master number.
Step 3: Reduce the year to a single digit or master number.
Step 4: Add the three results together. Reduce the total to a single digit or master number. This is your Life Path number.

Worked Examples

Born July 24, 1995
Month: July = 7 (already single digit)
Day: 24 → 2+4 = 6
Year: 1995 → 1+9+9+5 = 24 → 2+4 = 6
Life Path: 7+6+6 = 19 → 1+9 = 10 → 1+0 = 1

Born December 11, 1988
Month: December = 12 → 1+2 = 3
Day: 11 (master number, do not reduce)
Year: 1988 → 1+9+8+8 = 26 → 2+6 = 8
Life Path: 3+11+8 = 22 (master number, do not reduce) → Master Number 22

Born March 1, 2005
Month: March = 3
Day: 1
Year: 2005 → 2+0+0+5 = 7
Life Path: 3+1+7 = 11 (master number)

Master Numbers 11, 22, 33

If your Life Path calculation lands on 11, 22, or 33, you have a master number. These are not reduced further because they carry higher spiritual potential and more intense life lessons. Read our complete guide to master numbers for detailed meanings.

Life Path vs Other Core Numbers

Your full numerology chart includes five core numbers, each revealing a different dimension:

  • Life Path: Your primary journey and lesson
  • Destiny/Expression: Your talents, abilities, and what you bring to the world
  • Soul Urge/Heart's Desire: Your inner motivations and what fulfills you
  • Personality: How others perceive you at first meeting
  • Birthday Number: A secondary talent or trait that supports your Life Path

Common Calculation Mistakes

  • Adding all digits in one step: Always reduce month, day, and year separately first. Adding 7+2+4+1+9+9+5 in one go can skip master numbers.
  • Reducing master numbers: If any component is 11, 22, or 33, keep it. Do not reduce it to 2, 4, or 6.
  • Forgetting the final check: After adding the three reduced components, check if the sum is a master number before reducing.
